Functional Performance - Instructor: Dr. Ruth Bohlken

The term "functional performance" is used to convey a level of performance required in order to independently complete basic daily 'functional' activities. The list below illustrates activities requiring functional fitness.

* Getting in and out of bed
* Putting on shoes and socks
* Walking up or down a flight of stairs
* Reaching for an item on a kitchen shelf
* Bringing groceries inside
* Taking out the trash

Functional performance consists of five components including:
1) Muscular strength,
2) Muscular endurance,
3) Flexibility,
4) Cardiovascular fitness, and
5) Body Composition.

Chair Exercise / Building Balance

For those who may have difficulty standing for a long period of time, this chair based activities class will focus on improving overall strength, flexibility and balance.

Therapeutic Fitness - Instructor: Dr. Ruth Bohlken

Muscle deterioration is a major reason some individuals lose mobility. This class is designed for those who have difficulty with prolonged standing, those post physical therapy, individuals who have never exercised, or for individuals wanting to get back into exercise after an extended break. The class will provide overall strength and conditioning in addition to activities to enhance balance and flexibility.

Core Strength

Core Strength uses the ultimate exercise machine, your own body, to reshape and strengthen muscles. Pilates is a form of body conditioning that serves to tone and strengthen core muscles, improve posture and balance, heighten body awareness, increase flexibility and control, and create ease of movement in everyday life. In every exercise participants use a balance of abdominal and back muscles to control and create movement. This control, along with proper alignment, trains the muscles more efficiently and properly. Pilates stresses the use of the mid-section (core muscles) to control all movement which ultimately develops firmer abdominal muscles which, in turn, enhances digestion, posture, and balance.

Monday/Wednesday - 11:15 a.m. Summer Session

One On One Personal Training

For those needing individual attention, personal training will assist in pinpointing the areas that need improvement.

Dr. Bohlken will work one-on-one to design an individualized physical activity program. Call Dr. Bohlken with questions or to schedule an appointment.

In Home/On Site Training

Dr. Bohlken currently trains with individuals who are unable to leave their home. In addition to contracting with facilities such as Cypress Springs Wichita Alzheimer's and Memory Support Residence. Please contact Dr. Bohlken if this is the type of service you are interested in. Improving functional abilities through various exercises appropriate to the population is the primary focus of this type of training
